Among the contradictory judgments passed on “Caleb Williams” by Godwin’s contemporaries those of Hazlitt, Sir James Mackintosh, and Sir T. N. Talfourd were perhaps the most eulogistic, whilst De Quincey and Allan Cunningham criticized the book with considerable severity.

William Godwins Things as They Are, or: The Adventures of Caleb Williams actually reminded me of Charles Brockden Brown, and that is a very ambivalent, although all in all little flattering thing to say. However, I think my comparison is justified in that there are at least three similarities between Browns novels and Caleb Williams/5.

Both are present in the book. The hero is Caleb Williams, a secretary for a sullen employer named Falkland, a man who himself was reputed to be the innocent victim of a capital crime. Caleb spends considerable time prying into the affairs of his employer, who tells Caleb, that he is indeed guilty as charged and warns Caleb to be silent/5(4).

I think its funny that an English-language book has a more complete Spanish version article than it does on the English wikipedia. Anyway, I'm reading this book for a class and would be glad to expand it after I'm done reading.
